December 2001, HolidayTALK
By Andrea Learned

I admit it, but I'm not ashamed.  The holiday season has caught up with me and I've been unable to stick to my usual newsletter schedule.  I bet that this is OK by you, fair readers, because you aren't really reading many e-newsletters these days anyway.  (right?)

Before I go any further, I want to wish you all a great holiday season on behalf of both Lisa Johnson and myself.  We really appreciate your continuing interest in what we (as ReachWomen) have to share!

To experience our festive season's greeting, please go to:

Oh yeah.. I plan to get back to a reasonable newsletter schedule by the first week in January.  Never fear!

In this issue:

1.      Consumer Confidence Post September 11th
2.      Emphasis on Connection During the Holidays
3.      ReachWomen News - American Management
         Association seminar in the works

1.  According to "The Pulse" column in the December 2001 issue of American Demographics, marketers should strike a balance between economic confidence and faith in America.  While Americans don't want to hear that the economy is in trouble, they are also feeling a slight pinch of financial strain.

Always a concern for women shoppers, the article notes that these days all consumers have a strong desire for value - in both a fiscal and moral sense.  Furthermore, this is no time for "selling" luxury or indulgence.  To quote the article directly: "Marketing messages should be straightforward, honest and down-to-earth."

All the more reason to hone your marketing to women skills, as those points are always important for them.

2.  It's no surprise that women are craving more connection during this holiday season, and Marla Paul noted this in a November 21, 2001, article for the Chicago Tribune.  Hi-touch services like hair and nail salons, and products for home-entertaining or small scale comforts (bath salts) are expected to do well this year.

3.  We are developing a several day-long "Marketing to Women" seminar with the American Management Association and will keep you posted as to its launch date.
